Former England international Raheem Sterling is facing a possible prison sentence after pleading guilty to dangerous driving and possession of nitrous oxide.
Sterling, 31, appeared in court after crashing a Lamborghini in Hampshire during the morning rush hour on May 28, 2026.
The footballer was reportedly inhaling nitrous oxide from balloons while behind the wheel when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed off a busy road.
The court heard that Sterling’s driving was described as “absolutely horrendous”.
According to The Athletic, Sterling told police following his arrest that he “had a problem” with nitrous oxide.
Nitrous oxide is a controlled Class C drug in the UK, with recreational possession prohibited under legislation introduced in 2023, subject to exemptions for legitimate uses.
Sterling pleaded guilty to the charges. The court will now determine his sentence, which could include a custodial term.
The case comes amid continued scrutiny of the dangers of driving while under the influence of drugs and the risks associated with nitrous oxide use.
Sterling has enjoyed a high-profile football career, representing England and playing for clubs including Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
