President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that South Africa’s 2026 Local Government Elections will be held on 4 November 2026.
The announcement was made during his keynote address at the President’s Coordinating Council meeting in Boksburg on Thursday, ending months of anticipation over the official election date.
The confirmation follows the Independent Electoral Commission’s (IEC) voter registration weekend, scheduled for 20–21 June, as part of preparations for the polls.
Ramaphosa emphasised the importance of voter turnout, particularly among young people, urging broader public participation.
“As government, it will be our task to ensure a good turnout. The media will play a critical role in encouraging participation. We must ensure our people, especially the youth, take part in these elections,” he said.
Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa said the chosen date takes into account the December festive period and the January school calendar, making it the most practical option.
He added that education departments will need to adjust schedules to accommodate the electoral process and ensure smooth participation.
Hlabisa also indicated that the date may be declared a public holiday to maximise voter access to polling stations.
Government has further outlined plans to address voter apathy through a coordinated national strategy involving key stakeholders ahead of the elections.
Political parties have welcomed the announcement, expressing readiness to compete for voter support as campaigning intensifies in the coming months.
