President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver the keynote address at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town on Tuesday, as South Africa seeks to position the continent as a major player in the global green hydrogen economy.

Ramaphosa will address the summit virtually at 9am. The two-day event, hosted by Electricity and Energy Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, runs from 15 to 16 September.

The summit brings together African governments, international investors, civil society, academics and technology experts to discuss the continent’s potential in the emerging green hydrogen sector.

Green hydrogen is seen as an opportunity for South Africa and other African countries to tap into the global low-carbon energy market, with the continent boasting significant renewable energy resources, critical minerals and growing industrial demand.

The summit will focus on attracting local and international investment, developing export opportunities, creating jobs and advancing green industrialisation and regional infrastructure.

This year’s theme is: “Moving Africa’s Green Hydrogen Sector from PowerPoint to Gigawatts.”

The Presidency says the summit will also assess progress in project implementation, financing, infrastructure development and industrialisation across the continent.
