President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for urgent and coordinated action to address escalating conflicts across the continent, warning that instability threatens Africa’s development ambitions.
Addressing the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ramaphosa reaffirmed South Africa’s commitment to a peaceful, prosperous and integrated Africa in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063 blueprint.
He welcomed the AU Peace and Security Council’s latest report but said the continent remains deeply troubled by growing instability in several regions.
The President pointed to countries currently suspended from the AU due to unconstitutional changes of government, stressing the importance of swift political transitions to prevent further unrest and avoid a relapse into conflict.
Ramaphosa expressed particular concern about the worsening violence in Sudan and South Sudan, calling for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access and inclusive political dialogue.
Turning to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), he condemned ongoing territorial incursions by armed groups in the eastern provinces of Kivu and Ituri. He emphasised the need to protect the DRC’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
Ramaphosa said South Africa, through its role in the Regional Oversight Mechanism, would continue working with continental and regional partners to support efforts aimed at securing lasting peace in the region.
The President also briefed leaders on the outcomes of the G20 Leaders’ Summit held in Johannesburg in November 2025, highlighting discussions relevant to Africa’s development and global partnerships.
