President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the second interim report submitted by the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, saying it represents an important step towards restoring integrity within South Africa’s criminal justice system.

The report, handed over to the President on Friday, contains the Commission’s findings and recommendations following investigations into allegations of criminality, corruption and political interference within the justice system.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the ANC’s election campaign trail in Diepsloot on Saturday, Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the Commission’s work and its role in addressing systemic challenges within law enforcement agencies.

“The Madlanga Commission is an absolutely fantastic process. It is helping us to get rid of the rot within the criminal justice system. This is a self-cleansing process that the country is going through, and no one can claim that they are being targeted for political reasons. The Commission is uncovering wrongdoing, and through this process we will cleanse the police service and be able to move forward,” said Ramaphosa.

The President also commended the arrests and suspensions of several officials and individuals implicated during the Commission’s hearings, describing these developments as evidence that accountability is being enforced.

The latest report follows the Commission’s first interim report, which was submitted to the President in December 2025.

The inquiry, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is investigating allegations of corruption, criminal conduct and undue political influence within the criminal justice system.

The Commission is expected to conclude its work and submit its final report by the end of August 2026. Earlier this year, in March, it was granted an extension due to the volume of evidence being examined and the large number of witnesses scheduled to testify.

Hearings are set to resume on Monday, 1 June, following a two-week recess.
