Traffic volumes have increased on various roads across the country as holiday makers head to various destinations for the festive season.
All road users have been urged to exercise caution and abide by the law.
The Automobile Association (AA) said as part of the ongoing efforts to promote road safety and prevent road accidents, it is important that motorists manage both physical and mental fatigue as well as ensuring vehicle regular maintenance.
According to the association spokesperson, Eleanor Mavimbela, with the rise in road related accidents many of which are attributed to driver impairment, drivers and vehicle owners must take pro-active steps to safeguard themselves, their passengers and other road users.
“Fatigue is one of the leading contributors to road accidents, with research showing that drowsy and distracted drivers are significantly more likely to be involved in collisions.
Physical and mental fatigue can impair reaction times, decision-making, and attention skills essential for safe driving,” said Mavimbela.
Moreover, Mavimbela urged drivers to be alert of fatigue signs such as yawning and difficulty focusing.
“Anyone who feels tired or mentally drained should avoid driving, take breaks, or seek alternative transportation.
It’s also vital to get adequate rest before embarking on long trips, with the recommendation to take a break every two hours during extended journeys,” urged Mavimbela.
The AA stressed that the safety on the roads is a shared responsibility, urging motorists to follow some of the tips like ensuring vehicle fitness, taking regular breaks, getting enough sleep, avoiding distractions, staying hydrated and alert.
