South Africa’s ambassador-designate to the United States, Roelf Meyer, has arrived in Washington, D.C., marking a key step in efforts to reset strained diplomatic relations between Pretoria and Washington.

Meyer is expected to present his credentials to US authorities later this week, officially taking up his role as South Africa’s top envoy in the United States.

He replaces Ebrahim Rasool, who was expelled from the US in March last year.

His arrival comes amid ongoing attempts to stabilise relations following a sharp deterioration under the return of President Donald Trump to the White House.

The strained relationship has been shaped by political tensions and competing narratives around issues such as crime, migration, and race relations.

Meyer’s key mandate will be to restore trust, improve diplomatic communication, and strengthen economic cooperation between the two countries, with a particular focus on trade and investment confidence.

He is also expected to work on addressing misunderstandings and reinforcing bilateral ties at a critical moment in US–South Africa relations.
