Rustenburg implements water interruptions

The Rustenburg Local Municipality in the North West is urging residents and businesses to use water sparingly as it will be experiencing water interruption soon.

This as the municipalities two bulk water suppliers, Rand Water and Magalies Water, are currently under strain due to reduced water supply.

The municipality acting spokesperson Odirile Madiba said the two water boards have informed them about the forthcoming water interruptions, as they’re experiencing challenges extracting water from the dams.

In addition, Madiba said Magalies Water informed them about the low water levels at the Vaalkop Dam outside Rustenburg.

“The Vaalkop Dam is currently at low levels of about 23%.

This current situation is intensified by underwhelming rainfall cycles, unwavering heatwave in the region, and the degradation of raw water quality in the catchment due to pollution,” said Madiba.

According to Madiba, the rising water demand, low dam levels, changes in the precipitation patterns, drought, and water scarcity have resulted in Rand Water’s lower inflow and pressure at its Barnardsvlei system.

Restrictions will be implemented at various reservoirs.

The Municipality has apologised for the interruptions and is urging the residents to use water frugally during this period, as the recovery period is unknown at this stage.
