Rustenburg Local Municipality Speaker caves in and resigns after a push from the ANC’s top brass in North West

The Rustenburg Local Municipality Speaker Koketso Mogomotsi, resigned on Wednesday, at the council sitting held at the Rustenburg Civic Centre, in the North West, where Mayor Sheila Mabale Huma, was tabling her budget speech.

His resignation will come into effect from the date and time of a complaint and non-retractable notice of a Special or Ordinary Council Sitting signed by the Acting Municipal Manager of the Rustenburg local municipality or a person designated by the MEC for local government in the North West Province.

In his resignation letter, Mogomotsi said he is resigning as the Speaker of Council, but will remain the party’s representative Councillor, unless he receives a different communication from the party.

Mogomotsi together with other ANC ward councilors were ordered by their party’s Provincial Executive to vacate their positions earlier this month.

This also comes after the ANC NWC visit to Rustenburg over the weekend, where the ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula, was scathing on Mogomotsi and other councilors’s refusal or defiance of an order to vacate office.

Mbalula said no one is bigger than the ANC and emphasised that they will deal with both the Speaker and the Mayor before they leave the province.
