The Rustenburg Local Municipality in the North West has issued a strong condemnation following recent vandalism targeting municipal infrastructure which have severely disrupted its ability to provide essential services.

Most parts of the city were plunged into darkness for two days, due to the vandalism of the substations around the municipality.

According to the municipality, copper cables were stolen at the stations including the one at Waterkloof.

The municipality acting spokesperson Odirile Madiba emphasised the impact of these unlawful activities on service delivery.

“Vandalism of infrastructure is a significant problem that has resulted in delayed service delivery, disruption of essential services and puts a huge burden on the municipality,” said Madiba.

Moreover, Madiba adds that actions must be taken against the perpetrators, describing the destruction as acts of sabotage directed to the municipality and the residents.

“The municipality is cognisant of the continuous effects of the blackouts to both residents and businesses hence mayor Sheila Mabale-Huma is looking into establishing a committee that will work together to investigate and apprehend the suspects,” explained Madiba.

The municipality appealed for more public cooperation to end the scourge, adding that if not arrested, it’ll impact on service delivery.
