The South African Police Service (SAPS), in partnership with the Department of Higher Education, has launched a Campus Community Safety Forum at Taletso TVET College in Mahikeng to strengthen safety and combat crime on campus.
The initiative aims to create a safer learning environment by addressing crime, violence, substance abuse, bullying and other threats affecting students and staff.
Delivering the keynote address, North West Deputy Police Commissioner Ryno Naidoo stressed the importance of safeguarding institutions of higher learning.
“A college campus is much more than a place of learning. It is where future leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals and public servants are shaped. It is where lifelong friendships are formed, careers begin and hopes are transformed into reality. Such an environment must therefore be protected from crime, violence, substance abuse, bullying and all forms of criminality that threaten the well-being of students and staff,” said Naidoo.
He encouraged students to play an active role in creating safer campuses by reporting criminal activity, harassment, bullying and gender-based violence without fear.
“Do not remain silent when you witness criminal activity, bullying, harassment or gender-based violence. Report crime without fear. Support those who become victims. Reject substance abuse and criminal behaviour. Encourage your fellow students to make responsible choices, such as having a designated driver when attending social gatherings,” he said.
Naidoo concluded by emphasising that fighting crime requires collaboration between law enforcement, educational institutions, students and the wider community, adding that lasting success cannot be achieved without collective action.
