The South African Police Service (SAPS) has seized counterfeit sports apparel and manufacturing equipment worth more than R1.5 million during a multi-disciplinary takedown operation in Johannesburg’s CBD.
The operation was led by the SAPS National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit as authorities intensify efforts to disrupt the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit merchandise.
The seizure comes ahead of the Springboks’ highly anticipated clash against New Zealand at FNB Stadium, with police warning that demand for team-branded merchandise is likely to increase around the match.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said the timing of the operation was particularly significant as rugby supporters prepare for the encounter.
In addition to the counterfeit sports apparel, police confiscated manufacturing equipment and materials allegedly used to produce and distribute fake goods.
The seized items included counterfeit labels and stickers, an embossing machine and silkscreen plates.
Van Wyk urged members of the public to remain vigilant when purchasing sportswear and to avoid counterfeit products.
SAPS said it would continue strengthening operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks involved in the manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit and illicit goods.
The latest seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to protect consumers and legitimate businesses while tackling the growing trade in counterfeit merchandise.
