The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is reviewing its November 2026 social grant payment arrangements after one of its scheduled payment dates falls on the day of the local government elections.
SASSA had initially scheduled the Older Persons’ Grant for 3 November, the Disability Grant for 4 November and the Children’s Grant for 5 November. A fourth payment day for beneficiaries whose grants are under review was scheduled for 6 November.
The Disability Grant payment date of 4 November coincides with Election Day for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The election date has been formally gazetted, with the polls set for Wednesday, 4 November. President Cyril Ramaphosa has also declared Election Day a public holiday.
SASSA said on Tuesday that the November payment cycle was being reviewed “in view of the upcoming Local Government Elections”.
The agency said it would consult relevant stakeholders before announcing revised arrangements.
SASSA provides social assistance to more than 18 million people across the country.
The 2026/27 payment schedule was approved by National Treasury and announced in March, with grants generally staggered over three days to reduce congestion and improve payment efficiency.

The current schedule provides for the Older Persons’, Disability and Care Dependency grants to be paid at R2,400 from April 2026. The Child Support Grant and Grant-in-Aid increased.
National Treasury expects SASSA to administer about 18.9 million social grants by 2028/29, while its 2026/27 planning documents put the number of grants administered at about 19 million.
SASSA has not yet announced the revised November dates.
The agency says beneficiaries should await further communication and has reiterated its commitment to paying the right grant to the right person at the right time and place.
