Pretoria – Accused number two in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, Bongani Ntanzi, has told the High Court in Pretoria that investigators were not specific about the date of the Bafana Bafana captain’s killing when they initially questioned him about his alibi.
Ntanzi, who is standing trial alongside four other accused for the 2014 murder of Meyiwa, took the witness stand on Monday as part of his defence. The soccer star was fatally shot at the Vosloorus home of musician Kelly Khumalo’s parents.
According to the state, Ntanzi was one of the intruders who allegedly entered the house on the night Meyiwa was killed. Ntanzi testified that following his arrest in June 2020, police questioned him about his whereabouts but did not initially specify the date of the incident.
He told the court that it was only lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda who later mentioned the dates in question. Ntanzi said he was then taken from Rustenburg in the North West to his former place of employment in Carletonville, west of Johannesburg.
“Gininda asked me about my whereabouts on 27 October 2014 as well as the 26th. I responded by saying that if I am not on duty, then I am at home. It even came as a shock to him that I was gainfully employed because, according to his investigation, I was not employed but working in the taxi industry,” Ntanzi testified.
He added that he explained to the investigator that when he was not in Gauteng, he would be at home.
The state has previously argued that Ntanzi’s employer indicated he did not report for duty on the day Meyiwa was killed. However, during the trial, it was later submitted that Ntanzi was on leave at the time.
The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is expected to continue on today.
