Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, has been accused of attempting to bribe the father of a 16-year-old girl to withdraw charges against him.

Sibiya is facing several charges, including the alleged sexual grooming of the minor.

The allegation emerged during his bail application at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Prosecutor Velile Makhasana told the court that people linked to Sibiya allegedly attempted to interfere with witnesses after proceedings adjourned on Thursday.

“Information evidence that has been brought to my attention after we adjourned, attempts to interfere with the case were made last night,” Makhasana told the court.

He said the State was in possession of a recording relating to the alleged interference.

“We received a recording that the same witness, Mr M, by so doing tried to offer him money to drop the case,” Makhasana said.

The court also heard a recording in which Sibiya allegedly questioned Mr M about his involvement in his arrest.

According to the State, Sibiya questioned why Mr M had been involved in his arrest, saying he had previously financially assisted him when he was in need.

The State further alleges that Sibiya told Mr M that he could “get rid of him”.

The allegations have been raised during Sibiya’s bail application, and have not been tested through a trial.

The bail hearing has been postponed to next Wednesday.
