South Africa’s Commonwealth Games swimming campaign has highlighted a new approach to building international success, with a focus on experienced athletes delivering results on the biggest stage.
The 25-member squad returned home with an impressive 22-medal haul, competing strongly against nations with significantly larger sporting resources.
Swimming coach Dean Price says the team’s success came from trusting athletes who had reached the right stage of their careers, rather than expecting immediate results from younger swimmers.
According to Price, South Africa’s decision to select swimmers in their prime created a mature and united squad capable of performing under pressure.
Lara van Niekerk’s successful defence of her 50-metre breaststroke title reflected the team’s resilience. After battling health concerns and a difficult build-up, she produced a championship-winning performance when it mattered most.
Van Niekerk said every setback strengthened her mentally, adding that in a highly technical sprint event, determination and focus often separate medal winners from the rest.
The Commonwealth Games performance has strengthened South Africa’s confidence as the swimming programme turns its attention towards the Olympic Games in two years’ time.
