The Springbok women’s sevens team have booked their spot for their first-ever Olympics Games after winning the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens regional qualifiers in Tunisia.
The Renfred Dazel lead side sealed their place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, after beating Kenya 12-7 in the final.
Judging by the results, the Springboks cruised to lifting the title, recording comfortable wins against Zimbabwe (26-0), Uganda (19-0), Tunisia (27-7) and Zambia 31-0 in the semi-final to set up a date with Kenya.
Dazel revealed that he was delighted for the players and that they were able to finally record their name in the history books.
“I feel so happy for the players who worked so hard to achieve this – we were denied in 2016 and 2020, but this time it is official, and it’s such a great feeling,” said Dazel.
“It is huge for our system, and it is huge for women’s rugby in the country overall. There will be more opportunities now for girls to come and play rugby, so winning this weekend was immense for the women’s game. The future looks bright,” added the coach.
This is another highlight of the year for the Springbok’s side, who also secured core status on the revamped HSBC SVNS after winning the Challenger Series in Stellenbosch in April. The 2024 Summer Olympics, commonly known as Paris 2024, are scheduled to take place from 26 July to 11 August 2024, with Paris as the main host city and the games spread across 16 other cities in France.
