The state is opposing bail for Suliman Carrim, despite investigators verifying his return flight ticket and residential address, with the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court postponing judgment until next Wednesday.

Carrim, 49, appeared in court on Monday for the continuation of his bail application. He faces a charge under the Commissions Act for allegedly repeatedly failing to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Prosecutors argue that Carrim may evade trial and accuse him of tailoring his evidence during his testimony before the commission last week.

Prosecutor Donald Shiko told the court that Carrim’s alleged conduct undermined efforts to restore public confidence in the criminal justice system and raised concerns about public order and security.

The state also argued that the charge against Carrim indicated a risk of further criminal conduct.

Carrim’s lawyers challenged the state’s concerns about him evading trial, arguing that the claims required supporting evidence.

Magistrate Marc Curlewis postponed judgment until next Wednesday to verify the state’s allegations against Carrim against court transcripts.

Carrim will remain in custody pending the court’s decision on his bail application.
