One of South Africa’s most celebrated road runners, Gerda Steyn, has described 2025 as a remarkable year following a series of historic achievements on the marathon circuit.

Steyn clinched her sixth consecutive Two Oceans Marathon title in April and her fourth Comrades Marathon victory in June becoming only the second woman in history to accomplish the feat. She also secured a third-place finish at the Soweto Marathon in November, further cementing her dominance in long-distance running.

“I know I had a fantastic year and i’m honored to have the rpic results i had at the Soweto Marathon and the Comrades Marathon, plus Two Oceans its been an amazing year for me,” she said.

The 35-year-old says she is now enjoying a well-deserved break and is satisfied with her performances over the past season.

Speaking about the year ahead, the Free State-born athlete says she plans to build on her success and continue pushing the boundaries of her career.

“2026 I’m already looking forward to another wonderful year of running Ultra, my beloved races, Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon but I’ll also be incorporating other races.”

The Comrades and Two Oceans Marathons have come to define Steyn’s illustrious career, with her consistency and excellence continuing to inspire the nation.

She is a also a , a two-time Olympian represented South Africa at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021) and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
