The North West Department of Social Development and other stakeholders including the SAPS came to the rescue of stranded families in Assen and Klipvoorstad at the Madibeng Local Municipality, with social relief aid.
The two villages were left destitute by the recent floods, which severely affected 84 families.
The families were displaced by the rain that flooded their homes, however, no injuries were reported.
The Department spokesperson Petrus Siko said the families who faced undue hardship received social relief of distress in the form of food parcels from a team of social workers and SAPS who used a helicopter and some boats to access the affected areas in Madibeng.
“The affected families were identified with the help of the disaster management in the Bojanala District Municipality and were referred to the Department of Social Development service point in Madibeng.
Social workers worked tirelessly together with SAPS and other stakeholders to distribute food parcels to the affected families,” said Siko.
In addition to the social relief packages, Siko said social workers will also determine the extent of the needs of the residents.
“Social workers will conduct household profiling in the affected areas to determine the extent of the needs of the residents.
The profiling will take place as soon as the social workers have access to the affected areas,” explained Siko.
Some roads in Madibeng and other parts of the province are still not accessible after being damaged by the torrential rains.
