The Confederations of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Board has fined both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, for crowd during their clashes two weeks ago.
The board charged Sundowns for breaching Article 82 and 83.2 of the CAF Disciplinary Code as well as Articles 32 and 35 of the CAF Safety and Security Regulations, following violent clashes between Sundowns and Esperance de Tunis supporters during their encounter on 1 April at the Loftus Versveld Stadium in Pretoria.
“The club was found guilty and ordered to pay a fine of $100 000 (R1.8 million) and is required to strictly implement the safety and security measures specified in the CAF regulations, guidelines and directives, particularly in their upcoming matches,” read a statement from CAF.
CAF also found Esperance guilty of the inappropriate behaviour of its supporters and imposed a fined of $150 000 (R2.8 million).
The Buccaneers were charged with misconduct and failure to organise adequate security during their encounter with MC Alger played at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto.
“Orlando Pirates were fined $50 000 (R941 000) for the improper conduct of their team and a further $20 000 (R376 400) for the failure to ensure adequate security.
The Board also found club officials, Ezekiel Matebula, guilty and imposed a ban of four matches, of which two matches are suspended for a probationary period of one year, starting from the date of this decision.
Orlando Pirates players, Sipho Chaine and Nkosinathi Sibisi, were also found guilty and suspended for one match for improper conduct.
Their suspensions are suspended for one year, starting from the date of the present decision,” explained the statement.
As for Alger, CAF suspended and fined their assistant coach Mohamed Khezrouni $15 000 (R285 985) for four matches, for violating articles 82 and 123 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
Alger’s player Abdelkader Oussama Menezla, was suspended for two matches, including one suspended match for one year.
“A fine of $100 000 (R1.8 million) has been imposed for the inappropriate behaviour of its players and officials.
MC Alger also received a fine of $10 000 (R189 636) for the lighting of smoke bombs and a further $20 000 (R375 893) for the use of laser pointers.
Lastly, a fine of $10 000 (R189 636) has been imposed for the throwing of objects,” added the statement.
Meanwhile, the fines come as Sundowns will face Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League semi-final at the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria on Saturday.
Pirates on the other hand will face Pyramids FC from Egypt in the same competition the same day at the FNB stadium.
