Communities in the Taung Local Municipality have raised concerns over prolonged water shortages, with some residents reporting that they have gone for more than a month without reliable access to clean drinking water.
Residents say the situation has forced them to buy water when they can afford it, while some households are left without clean drinking water for days when they do not have the means to purchase it. They also report challenges in accessing water for basic household needs, including bathing and preparing children for school in the mornings.
Residents have further expressed concern over the failure of communal taps provided to communities, saying the infrastructure has not provided a reliable alternative during periods of water shortages.
While water tankers have been deployed as a short-term intervention, residents remain concerned that the measure will not provide a sustainable solution. They fear that communities could continue experiencing the same challenges once the temporary intervention comes to an end.
The prolonged shortage has also raised concerns about the potential health impact on residents, particularly elderly people and other vulnerable members of the community who require consistent access to clean water.
Taung Local Municipality Mayor Motseokae Maje says the municipality is working towards a long-term solution through funding support from Infrastructure South Africa.
Maje says the intervention will assist the municipality in improving water supply and responding to the growing demand for water across communities. He says the municipality is mindful of the challenges faced by residents and appreciates the intervention, which is expected to improve the reliability of water supplies once implemented.
According to Maje, the project will enable the municipality to draw water directly from reliable sources, reducing reliance on temporary measures and providing communities with a more sustainable water supply over the long term.
