In a distressing tale that highlights the vulnerability of trusting hearts, Nobuhle, a 57-year-old teacher from Pretoria, has found herself at the centre of a scam that drained her of an astounding R2.5 million at the hands of her Tanzanian boyfriend, Mark Kagame. Their romance began sweetly, but the story quickly turned sour, leaving Nobuhle in both an emotional and financial quagmire.
The relationship took a troubling turn when Kagame persuaded Nobuhle to resign from her teaching post, citing her frequent illness as a reason for quitting. Following her resignation, she came into possession of her pension funds, a prospect that should have provided her with some comfort in her later years. However, not long after receiving this money, she became entangled in what would become a devastating betrayal.
Nobuhle deposited her pension funds, amounting to R2 million, into a bank account belonging to Kagame’s uncle, under bizarre circumstances. She later claimed that she was heavily influenced by rituals which clouded her judgment, leading her to make the transaction without fully understanding the implications.
It wasn’t long before Kagame vanished, absconding with Nobuhle’s life savings, leaving her to grapple with the fallout of her misplaced trust. Despite the significant amount of money involved and the emotional turmoil experienced by Nobuhle, law enforcement agencies, including the Hawks and the police, have determined that she willingly transferred the funds. This has posed a challenge in mounting a legal case against Kagame, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
