A squad of 226 athletes and 45 officials are set to fly the South African flag high during the 13th edition of the African Games that will be held in Accra, Ghana, between 8-23 March 2024.
Athletes from 53 Countries will take part in 23 sporting activities that include but are not limited to athletics, rugby, basketball, triathlon, arm wrestling and others.
The President of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) Barry Hendricks is confident that the selected team to represent the nation is capable.
“It is a big squad that shows the commitment South Africa must have to compete in the major African events, while also providing opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest level. We congratulate each and every member of the squad on their selection,” said Hendricks.
In the previous 2019 African Games that were held in Rabat, Morocco, Team SA scooped a total of 86 medals of gold, silver, and bronze across 11 sporting codes.
The team that consists of men, women and young people is scheduled to depart from the country at alternating intervals, with the first group leaving on 27 February and the rest on 5 March.
The games will be held in three cities, Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast.
The host has assured participants that final preparations ahead of the tournament are in full swing.
The country’s Youth and Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif said they “have invested in robust infrastructure networks, diverse accommodation options and advanced communication technologies.”
He added that they are optimistic that these games will display the best parts of Ghana and unite the continent.
