Zandile Mafe, the Cape Town man who was arrested and imprisoned for allegedly setting the National Assembly building on fire, will be admitted to a mental health institution in the Eastern Cape in April.

The defence for Mathe previously told the court that he did not want to be admitted to Valkenburg Psychiatric Hospital, due to an alleged experience he had there before.

Mafe, 51, made a brief appearance in the Western cape High court on Friday where a pre-trial hearing was postponed to 28 March to allow the finalisation of the logistical arrangements for his admission.

Mafe was arrested in January 2022 on charges of arson and terrorism for his alleged involvement in the blaze that gutted the National Assembly building.

The building is yet to be repaired and according to the secretary to Parliament Xolile George, the reconstruction of the building will take up to two years.

In October 2022, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced during his budget speech that R2 million had been allocated for the repair of the building.
