The Vitality Netball World Cup 2023 Trophy has arrived in the North West and the coveted cup was handed over in Wolmaranstad on Monday following the completion of its Free State tour and parade.

The trophy comes to the North West just 39 days before the Netball Cup Tournament to be hosted for the first time on African soil in Cape Town from 28 July to 6 August.

Six countries will take part in the competition and Netball SA President Cecilia Molokwane said this is a big deal for South Africans.

“This event is very important, the first time in sixty years on African soil and in South Africa, so it’s history-making. It is an honour and a privilege for us to say we have brought this World Cup here in the country for people to see it and for people to understand that the World Cup is here and women as leaders can do something that men can do,” she said.

Eight big screens will be mounted at different fan parks across the province for fans and netball lovers who cannot get to Cape Town.

The Netball World Cup was welcomed with songs and dance in Wolmaranstad with some residents saying they are happy to have at least seen the trophy because they are not going to Cape Town for the tournament.

The trophy parade continues through the streets of Wolmaranstad and it will be moved to Jouberton using the N12 before it’s taken to Kanana outside Orkney, then Matlosana Mall before making its way to Ventersdorp.

It will be handed over to Northern Cape Province after touring all four districts of the province.
