The president of South Africa received his Portuguese colleague on Tuesday, June 6.

At a news conference, Cyril Ramaphosa gave an overview of the meeting he had the day before with the leaders of Zambia, Senegal, the Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Egypt.

Midway through June, the Presidents reportedly indicated that they would be willing to visit Ukraine and Russia.

Our journey is actually a peace mission, and we want to refer to it as a road to peace, Ramaphosa said. “Yesterday we met and confirmed that we are now at a stage where we will visit Kiev and Moscow,” he said.

“We want to listen to both sides, and they need to outline to us their own perspective on the war as well as what are their minimum requirements for bringing the conflict to an end.”

While on a state visit, the president of Portugal witnessed the signing of a defense cooperation deal between Pretoria and Lisbon. Along with Ramaphosa, Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa spoke on the ongoing crisis in Mozambique.

A defense co-operation pact was inked between the two nations. Additionally, the current war in Mozambique was discussed.

The Portuguese Republic pays a state visit to South Africa during the same week that it observes its National Day on June 10, 2023.
