For severe thunderstorms in Gauteng, the South African Weather Service has issued a level 2 warning.
The weather service stated that it anticipates showers throughout day Thursday and issued a warning that certain regions may see localised flooding as a result of the heavy rainfall.
Thursday in the province has an 80% probability of rain, according to forecaster Puseletso Mofokeng. “We should anticipate an 80% likelihood of showers and thundershowers across the southwestern areas, in places like Carletonville and Veereneging,” she warned. The Johannesburg emergency services agency meanwhile advised citizens to be cautious.
Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesperson, advised inhabitants of low-lying regions, particularly those in informal settlements, to keep an eye on water levels and steer clear of crossing river streams.
Here is the impact of level 2 thunderstorms according to the SA Weather Service:
- Localised flooding of settlements, low-lying roads and bridges
- Localised damage to infrastructure
- Severe lightning can possibly result in localised fire incidents, injuries to humans and livestock
- Difficult driving conditions leading to minor vehicle accident
