The SA Police Union (Sapu) has issued a statement that civil servants will join the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) strike on March 17.
“SAPU wishes to advise our members that a notice to strike has been sent to the public service and administration department. Members are invited to join the picket line,” the statement read.
“Only authorized members will be able to participate in the strike. According to National police spokeswoman Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, “the bulk of SAPS employees are Police Act members, which includes operational members and the 10111 call takers and dispatchers, who are designated an important service and are not allowed to join in any type of strike.
“South Africans may rest assured that it will be business as usual across all stations and all SAPS service sites.
“All 1 160 police stations across the nation will be fully functioning, available to the public, and functional,” Mathe stated.
On Monday, the Labour Appeal Court barred the trade union Nehawu, its members, and its employees from engaging in any form of industrial action.
