The South African legal community is mourning the loss of Thulani Mngomezulu, an attorney who played a significant role as a defence representative in the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. Mngomezulu passed away on Tuesday morning at Thelle Moroerane Hospital in Vosloorus, succumbing to an undisclosed illness after a prolonged battle that had seen him watching court proceedings online in recent weeks.

Family spokesperson Dumisile Mngomezulu shared the heartbreaking news, stating, “It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and son. We confirm his untimely passing in the early hours of 10th December 2024.” Dumisile further expressed gratitude for the community’s love and support during this difficult time and requested privacy for the family as they process their grief.

Mngomezulu had been a key figure in the murder trial since October 2023, engaging in a trial within a trial at the Pretoria High Court. His declining health had previously resulted in requests for sick leave, including an absence from court proceedings from October 22 to 25 of this year. State prosecutor George Baloyi revealed that Mngomezulu required medical attention during a critical phase of the trial when the lead investigator was expected to continue his testimony. Baloyi elaborated on Mngomezulu’s health struggles, referencing the attorney’s consistent need for a face mask during his appearances in court since October.

Concerns over Mngomezulu’s wellbeing had already started to surface as he navigated his responsibilities under the shadow of his illness. His passing marks not only a personal loss for his family and friends but also a gap in representation for the defendant in a case that has captured the attention of the nation.

The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial remains a significant focal point in South African society. As developments unfold, it is evident that Mngomezulu’s contributions, both professional and personal, will be remembered by those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

As tributes pour in for the late attorney, the legal community reflects on his dedication to justice. His loss is felt deeply, and he leaves behind a legacy of commitment to his clients and the profession.
