A devastating incident at the Macadamia Military Base near Komatipoort, Mpumalanga, has left the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) reeling following a tragic series of events. An ongoing investigation has revealed that the attacker involved in the stabbing was, in fact, a deceased member of the SANDF.

The horrific encounter reportedly began with an altercation between soldiers stationed at the base, part of the SANDF’s ongoing Operation Corona. According to Rear Admiral Prince Tshabalala, the attacker fatally stabbed a fellow soldier and subsequently took his own life by inflicting serious wounds upon himself. Details surrounding the incident remain sparse, but it is understood that the attacker had been approved for withdrawal from duty before the violent outbreak.

“This incident had occurred during an operation called Operation Corona,” Rear Admiral Tshabalala stated, offering insight into the unfortunate event. “One member died during the incident and the attacker later died from wounds which he stabbed himself on the neck.”

Following the attack, another soldier sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. Initial reports mistakenly labelled this individual as an arrested suspect, but that information has since been corrected.

As investigations continue, SANDF and the South African Police Service (SAPS) have launched a comprehensive joint inquiry into the tragic incident, with the local police actively exploring the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Jabu Ndubane addressed the ongoing investigations during a media briefing, confirming the initiation of a case involving murder, attempted murder, and an inquest following the incident: “We are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder, also an inquest after an incident that occurred at Macadamia Base Camp for SANDF, where apparently there was an alleged fight amongst individuals.” He noted the complexity of the situation, stating, “Investigations are still ongoing, no arrest as yet.”

Furthermore, in the wake of such a traumatic occurrence, the SANDF has activated its Military Health and Chaplain Services, ensuring that the affected members receive essential psychological support during this distressing time.
