Malelane, Mpumalanga – Four people, including a minibus taxi driver and a young toddler, lost their lives in a devastating side-swipe collision between a minibus taxi and a light delivery vehicle (bakkie) on the R581 road between KaMhlushwa and Malelane. The incident occurred on the evening of March 7, 2026, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Several other passengers sustained injuries in the crash and were promptly rushed to Shongwe Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Details on the exact number of injured and their conditions remain limited as authorities focus on the ongoing investigation.

Mpumalanga Provincial Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi confirmed that traffic officials are actively probing the cause of the accident. Initial reports suggest poor visibility at night may have played a role, but no definitive conclusions have been reached yet.

MEC Jackie Macie extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and urged all motorists to prioritize road safety, emphasisng the importance of adhering to speed limits and exercising caution during nighttime travel. “Such tragedies are preventable if we all commit to responsible driving,” Macie stated.

This accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in South Africa, particularly involving minibus taxis, which are a vital mode of transport but often involved in fatal incidents due to various factors under scrutiny. Updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
