President Cyril Ramaphosa has commended the late Pope Francis, for his efforts to unite humanity and bring world peace.
His remarks come after the 88-year-old Pontiff passed away early today, at his Vatican residence, the Casa Santa Marta.
“Catholics and people of all faiths are saddened today by the passing of a spiritual leader who sought to unite humanity and wished to see a world governed by fundamental human values.
“As the leader of the Church and a global figurehead, Pope Francis advanced a world view of inclusion, equality and care for marginalised individuals and groups, as well as responsible and sustainable custody of the natural environment.
His extraordinary life story and ascendancy to the Holy See unfolded with humility and a profound commitment to making the Church and the world a better place for all of humanity.
Following so soon after the celebration of Easter, Pope Francis’ passing will extend this traditional period of prayer and reflection, which will unite the Church and the international community in reflecting on the Holy Father’s life and legacy,” said Ramaphosa when offering condolences to Catholics in South Africa and globally on the passing of the Pope.
His passing is regarded by some as a tremendous loss not only to the Roman Catholic community, but to the Christian fraternity.
Frances has also been commended for his active global advocacy for peace and human rights.
During an exclusive interview on YOUFM, renowned Religious and Cultural Expert, Professor Musa Xulu, said the passing of the Pope during the Easter holiday period, signifies his close knitted role in the church.
“The members of the Roman Catholic Church saw the Pope as a representative of Christ on Earth, and therefore, his passing just after Christ has risen from the dead, signifies that connection between Christ himself and the office of the Pope,” Xulu explained.
Furthermore, he sent condolences to all the members of the Catholic church while expressing confidence that they and the rest of the world will draw from the Pope’s teachings of love and peace.
Meanwhile, Fatherhood Fellowship representative from Promosa, Potchefstroom in the North West, Glenville Fransman, echoed Xulu’ sentiments when he implored whoever will assume the late Pope’s position, to continue leading the people with compassion.
“It is a big role to lead the church but whoever comes must remember to continue spreading the word with love, understanding and peace, just as the Pope did.
He encouraged the next successor to continue building nations across the globe and stand for people’s rights despite their race,” remarked Fransman.
The Pope used his last Easter message to renew calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, as Israeli Military forces intensified their bombardment of Palestine, leading to more deaths and displacement.
The Pope will also be remembered for his social activism and the role he played in shifting the church’s approach to the LGBTQ+ community when he permitted Roman Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples back in 2023.
The move was part of his efforts to create a more inclusive environment in the church.
