President Donald Trump has defended his decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House, as the three news organisations have taken legal action against his administration over the restrictions.

The three outlets filed a lawsuit in federal court on Monday, arguing that the administration violated constitutional protections for freedom of the press. They are seeking court intervention to restore their access to the White House while the case proceeds.

The dispute began after Trump announced on Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from White House grounds. Reporters from the organisations were subsequently denied entry and had their press credentials revoked.

Trump has argued that the decision was justified by his objections to reporting from the organisations. In a social media post, he accused media outlets of reporting what he described as “fiction and lies”. The administration has also maintained that access to the White House is a privilege rather than an unrestricted right.

The news organisations strongly dispute that reasoning. In a joint statement, CNN, MS NOW and Politico said they were taking legal action to protect their First Amendment rights and the principle that government officials should not determine what the press reports or publishes. Their lawsuit alleges violations of both the First Amendment and the Fifth Amendment.

The confrontation has also affected the wider White House press operation. Major television networks have halted pooled video coverage of Trump’s events in response to the restrictions, disrupting the normal system in which broadcasters share coverage of presidential appearances.

The White House dispute has therefore moved beyond a disagreement between the president and individual news organisations and into a broader legal question concerning press access, presidential authority and constitutional protections for journalists.

The court proceedings are expected to determine whether the administration can legally impose the restrictions and whether the three organisations should regain access while their challenge is considered.

The case comes amid continuing tensions between Trump and sections of the US news media. The outcome could provide further guidance on the limits of presidential control over access to the White House and the rights of journalists covering the executive branch.
