Touted as a high-stakes engagement, the talks are poised to commence at 9pm South African time, with Trump characterising the upcoming discussions as akin to a chess game, filled with intricate strategies and significant consequences.
This summit is notably historic as it marks Putin’s first visit to US soil in nearly a decade, reigniting diplomatic dialogues that have been largely stagnant since his meeting with former President Joe Biden in Geneva in June 2021. That meeting occurred shortly before Russia’s ground invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, an act that has led to Putin being wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, specifically for the unlawful deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children.
