A warmer tone between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping has offered a temporary easing of tensions, but major disagreements continue to test relations between the world’s two biggest powers.

During their White House meeting, both leaders highlighted areas of common interest and cooperation, while acknowledging that difficult issues remain between Washington and Beijing.

Trump adopted a notably conciliatory tone, saying the United States and China had made “tremendous strides” in their relationship.

The meeting is the third time the two leaders have met since last year, reflecting the importance of maintaining direct dialogue despite their differences.

However, several contentious issues continue to complicate the relationship.

The trade dispute remains a central concern, while US support for Taiwan continues to face strong opposition from Beijing.

China’s continued purchases of Iranian oil are another source of tension between Washington and Beijing.

The two countries are also facing a newer challenge: how to approach the regulation of artificial intelligence as competition over the technology intensifies.

The talks therefore come at a delicate moment for the relationship. While Trump’s conciliatory approach and the emphasis on shared interests point to an effort to maintain dialogue, the discussions will also have to navigate longstanding strategic and economic disagreements.

The outcome of the three-day visit could provide an indication of whether the improved diplomatic tone can lead to practical cooperation on issues that have repeatedly strained relations between the United States and China.
