Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s 9-year-old daughter, North West has cropped up as a major fan of American rapper, Isis Gaston affectionately known as Ice Spice.
North Cosplay Ice Spice in a string of posts shared on social media. Cosplay, is an activity and performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character. In the videos North appeared with a curly orange wig and an Ice-Spice-like outfit, dancing and chanting along to Ice Spice and PinkPantheress’ Boy’s A Liar Pt.2.
This however set twitter streets alight as some users took exception to North listening to a song with suggestive lyrics. North sang:“Sayin he home but I know where he ay, like bet he blowin her back/Thinkin ‘bout me’cause he know that it’s fat”.
Following this social media storm, an old video of Kanye’s rant after a TikTok video of North wearing makeup resurfaced, with many incorrectly labelling it a direct response to North’s recent Ice Spice clip. West has always been vocal about not wanting his kids on the platform.
“I told Kim to stop antagonising me with this TikTok thing. I am a father, and I know ya’ll don’t respect fathers and I am not allowing my daughter to be used by TikTok or Disney . I have a say. There’s no such thing as 50/50 custody in society because it always leans towards the mom,” he was heard saying in the old video.
The twitter mania continued as others went as far as questioning how the 9-year-old was being parented. Kim and Kanye’s divorce was finalised in November last year, with both of them granted joint physical and legal custody of their four children. In a “In Real Life” (IRL) podcast interview with Angie Martinez after their separation, Kim spoke about the challenges of co-parenting with Kanye.
“I had the best dad. I don’t want to lie. Co-parenting is really hard! I had the best dad and the best experiences and that is all I want for my kids,” she said.
On the current Tik Tok North controversy, other users supported Kanye’s take on parenting, like the one who wrote:
“Kanye was right ya’ll just ignorant. No way you see an actual child dressing up like a sexualized rapper who makes music about sexual things cute and funny. It’s disgusting”.
Meanwhile, some people felt that the whole thing was simply blown out of proportion. “I can’t lie, North West is like every other kid! Let’s not act like we didn’t tie up our tops and whine against the wall copying Christina, Britney, J-LO and etc” another user wrote.
