The University of Johannesburg (UJ) have made history by winning their first Varsity Netball title after defeating defending champions North-West University (NWU) Eagles 56–44 in the 2026 final at the Mafikeng Great Hall.

The Orange Army controlled the contest for much of the match, producing a disciplined defensive display while making the most of their opportunities in attack.

UJ established an early advantage, leading 14–11 after the opening quarter before taking a 27–24 lead into half-time.

The decisive moment came in the third quarter when UJ increased the pressure and capitalised on NWU’s errors. The Johannesburg side extended their lead to 46–30 heading into the final 15 minutes.

NWU attempted to fight back in the final quarter, but UJ maintained their composure to secure a 56–44 victory and deny the defending champions back-to-back titles.

The result marks a landmark moment for UJ, who now add their name to the Varsity Netball winners’ list for the first time.

UJ’s Tarle Mathe was named Player of the Match, while Madibaz player Juanita van Tonder collected the FNB Player of the Tournament and Suzuki Players’ Player of the Year awards.
