The Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality has deployed eight water tanker trucks as part of an emergency intervention to address persistent water supply challenges while longer-term infrastructure solutions are being implemented.
The initiative represents a short-term investment aimed at strengthening water access across four local municipalities affected by unreliable supply. Each beneficiary municipality received two water tankers based on assessed service delivery needs.
Speaking at the handover, Executive Mayor Councillor Motseokae Maje said the allocation was guided by the specific requirements of each municipality and formed part of the district’s broader response to ongoing water challenges.
Naledi Local Municipality was excluded from the water tanker allocation as it currently has a stable water supply. Instead, the municipality requested waste management trucks to improve refuse collection services. The district approved the request, with the vehicles expected to be handed over next month.
MMC for Engineering and Technical Services Pitso Seepamere said the deployment of the tankers was an important milestone in addressing long-standing water shortages.
He said the intervention would provide immediate relief to communities while the municipality continues to pursue permanent infrastructure projects designed to improve water security.
The deployment highlights the growing pressure on municipalities to balance immediate service delivery demands with long-term infrastructure investment. While water tankering provides temporary relief, communities continue to call for accelerated upgrades to water networks and infrastructure to reduce reliance on emergency measures.
Residents welcomed the intervention, saying it would provide relief to households that have experienced years of inconsistent water supply.
Resident Poloko Totong said communities had waited for a response to the water challenges and welcomed the municipality’s efforts to address the crisis.
Another resident, Mpho Matuta, praised the collaboration between residents and the municipality, saying continued engagement between communities and government remained essential in improving service delivery outcomes.
However, residents urged government to prioritise sustainable water infrastructure solutions to ensure reliable access to water and reduce the long-term financial burden associated with emergency water supply interventions.
The district municipality’s latest investment reflects the balancing act facing local governments: providing immediate assistance to communities while securing funding and implementing infrastructure projects that deliver lasting improvements.
