YOU FM has officially cemented its position as the largest urban commercial radio station in the North West, reaching an impressive 500,000 listeners across traditional radio, digital platforms, and streaming, according to WhyFive’s BrandMapp 2025 report.

The station’s exponential growth is driven by its relatable storytelling, authentic on-air personalities, and a distinct urban sound that resonates across age groups, cultures, and regions throughout the province.

Managing Director Tebogo Mashego praised the vision of founder and chairperson Tebogo Pooe, who launched the station six years ago with a deep focus on research and understanding the needs of the North West audience.

“He had a clear vision for the station and invested heavily in research to understand the market and the audience. That’s how our theme ‘In Tune With You’ was born,” said Mashego.

Mashego said the station’s success is a direct reflection of its listeners and the meaningful content they inspire.

“We are inspired by our listeners. We have real conversations with our people and cater to the specific needs of our communities.”

Despite challenges along the way, Mashego described the six-year journey as immensely fulfilling — particularly with the station now celebrating half a million listeners.

“As we celebrate our sixth birthday, we’re growing stronger. Our listeners guide and inspire our conversations. We always say, ‘we cry with you, we laugh with you — that is who we are, and we celebrate with you.’ This milestone belongs to our listeners.”

Looking ahead, Mashego said the next goal is bold: doubling the audience to one million listeners.

Dinkwetse Moswetsi described her experience at YOU FM as a “rollercoaster,” but one filled with unity and support.

“It’s exciting to work here. There is great teamwork, and we motivate each other to achieve our dreams. We thank our listeners for their support and messages — and we encourage them to keep tuning in.”

Thandi Mazibuko, who joined the station in 2019, said YOU FM’s strength lies in the care it shows for its listeners.

She recalled one of the station’s most memorable community interventions:

“A mother once drove all the way from Mabopane seeking help for her son who was struggling with drug addiction. She felt helpless and didn’t know where to turn. We connected her with the right people, and her son eventually received the help he needed. Knowing we played a role in that journey is something I will never forget.”

As YOU FM celebrates this major milestone, its team remains committed to amplifying local stories, uplifting communities, and continuing to stay “in tune” with the people of the North West.
