As the country celebrates Women’s Day, 41-year-old Khumo Piet from Tseoge near Morokweng, who later relocated to Mahikeng, is encouraging young girls to consider a profession in medical technology.
Piet said she gained interest in medical technology during a career day at Letsatsing Science School in Mahikeng and she was hooked from there on.
Today she is running her laboratory – Vivant Laboratory Service in Klerksdorp, in an industry dominated by big white-owned multinational companies and leading pathology laboratories around the country.
Piet said doors are finally opening for black women and believes women are one-step closer to freedom and equality.
“I always wanted to be in the medical field. My advice to young women who want to follow in my footsteps is for them to study medical laboratory science; I feel the horizons are expanding as there is a number of young black women who have broken into the business of owning laboratories.
“I founded Vivant Laboratory in 2022 and only started operations in May 2023. It took almost a year to begin operations due to the requirements of the regulatory bodies which every laboratory must be registered with prior to being operational,” she said.
This year’s Women’s Month takes place under the theme, ‘Accelerating Socio-Economic Opportunities for Women’s Empowerment.
