uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK Party) President Jacob Zuma says he is confident the party will succeed in its legal challenge against the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) ahead of the November 4 Local Government Elections.
Zuma was speaking to Newsnote on Wednesday at the IEC’s Electoral Code of Conduct signing ceremony at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.
The MK Party has taken legal action relating to alleged irregularities in the 2024 national and provincial elections. Zuma says the court’s decision on the party’s application is taking too long.
“We will win that case. No doubt. That’s why they don’t want to come to court,” Zuma said.
He also accused the IEC of failing to properly conduct the electoral process.
“All we can say is they didn’t run the process properly,” he said.
MK Party targets municipalities
Zuma also expressed confidence that the MK Party will secure victories in every municipality where it is contesting the upcoming local government elections.
“We are winning all, even eThekwini,” he said.
The party is contesting its first Local Government Elections since its formation in 2023.
The MK Party made a major breakthrough in the 2024 national and provincial elections, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, where it emerged as the largest party in the provincial legislature. Its performance also saw it become a significant political force nationally becoming the third biggest party overtaking the EFF.
The party has continued to challenge aspects of the 2024 election process through the courts, while the IEC has maintained the integrity of the electoral process.
The November 4 elections will therefore provide the MK Party with its first opportunity to contest municipal government seats nationally since its formation.
