Two people have been killed and two more are fighting for their lives in hospital after a  weekend shooting at a local bottle store in Jouberton outside Klerksdorp in the North West.

The motive for the shooting is unknown, and the alleged perpetrators are said to have left in a minibus.

It is unclear if the victims were targeted, and North West police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh said information was still being gathered.

“The police are investigating two cases of murder and two cases of attempted murder, this comes after the incident that was reported in the early evening”.

According to Myburgh, the shooting was recorded at a bottle store in Extension 1, which is located next to the hostel.

“Information that we have gathered thus far indicates that two men entered the bottle store and bought beer, then they went out, and two others were waiting outside. After these two men left the bottle store, there was a random shooting in which four people were shot,” she said.

Myburgh said one person was pronounced dead at the scene and the other was certified dead in hospital. Two other people who were injured in the shooting are still in hospital.

She confirmed that the assailants fled the scene in a minibus and that no arrests have been made.

The two killings come at the back of the third quarter crime statistics released on Friday, where Police Minister Bheki Cele said murder cases were up by 10%, while the number of attempted murders increased from 93% to 11.5%  between October and December 2022.
