The Moses Kotane Local Municipality, in the North West celebrated Youth Day on Wednesday at the Moruleng Mall and used the occasion to raise awareness on the pitfalls of gangsterism, gender-based violence, crime and substance abuse.

SAPS, School safety Officer in Mogwase, Sargent Phumla Vundla said there’s high reported cases of gangsterism among learners in the area and the police saw it fit to try and address the challenges they experience in the community especially at the Moruleng Mall.

This place is regarded as one of the places where people buy, consume and sell drugs. Our learners are loitering at the mall before and after school, some being part of gangs. We need to work together and share as much knowledge with them and the community, so that they know that they’re destroying their lives by behaving irresponsibly.

“We deal with so many cases of minors consuming drugs and not listening to their teachers. We also engage with learners and we have found that most of them are bullying others, under the influence of alcohol and drugs. We have created this forum last year, with the aim of monitoring and cleaning our mall of gangsters and abusers, ” said Vundla.

Bakgatla Ba Kgafela Chief, Nyalala Pilane said their main priority is to end GBV and gangsterism in Moruleng and the community is encouraged to report any acts of crime to the police.
