ANC MP Sibusiso Kula says he is ready to return to work after multiple court postponements

ANC Member of Parliament Sibusiso Kula who is set to go on trial for the alleged murder of his wife said he will be going back to work next Tuesday.

Kula appeared briefly in the Orkney Magistrate Court in the North West and the case was postponed because the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has not provided Kula’s lawyer, Gcina Dlanjwa with a list of witnesses who it intends to call when the trial begins.

The prosecution has missed several deadlines to submit the list of witnesses to the defence and this resulted in postponements.

On Friday a new order was granted for the prosecution to give to the defense a list of witnesses by 3 July.

“I can assure you today that is still not going to be complied with because we are of the firm conviction that the state does not have a case against me. They continue to give us an issue that they are postponing for further investigations and that they are still waiting for DNA results. Their excuses for postponing continue to expand every day,” Kula said.

Kula has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder and is out on R50 000 bail. The case has been postponed to 6 September for further investigations and for the state to provide the list of witnesses.

“One of the hurting matters about this thing is that I continue to be deprived of performing my responsibility but I am glad that on Tuesday and Wednesday, I will be in Parliament to be part of the assessment of the ANC MPs in terms of the work we have undertaken since we have been elected and I cannot wait for that moment,” he said.

Kula said even when Parliament resumes after recess, he will be in Cape Town to fulfill his responsibility as a member of parliament.

“We have been elected by the people of South Africa not to bask in the sun but to be able to resolve their day-to-day problems so I am looking forward to going back to Cape Town, going back to work so that I can earn my keep, I don’t like earning by staying at home I like earning by working,” he said.

Kula submitted his letter to the ANC in April stating that he was stepping aside and no disciplinary hearings had taken place.

The ANC provincial office could not be reached for comment.
