The Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court in the North West, has denied Sibongiseni Ngubane bail in connection with the killing of businessman Ben Gumbi. This after the state successfully opposed his bail bid, after the same court granted the reopening of his bail application on Monday.

Prosecutor Faith Mogaki argued that the state has a strong case against the accused. She also highlighted that the 33-year-old Ngubane’s fingerprints were discovered on the vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime, and that he was positively identified during an identity parade by witnesses.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Regional Spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, welcomed the court’s judgment.

‘’The NPA welcomes the Rustenburg Magistrates Court judgment, in denying Ngubane bail. We believe it’s in the interests of justice for him to remain in police custody, until the trial is completed,” said Henry Mamothame.

According to police, Ngubane was arrested by a multi-disciplinary team which was established after the murder of Gumbi in the Rustenburg CBD on 23 August 2023.

He was arrested last month in Germiston, Ekurhuleni, after he appeared in court on charges of armed robbery wherein, he was released on a bail of R3 000. Ngubane also has a pending case of a firearm and ammunition in Alberton and he is out on bail of R 1000 in the matter.

Police say a manhunt has since been launched for 3 other suspects believed to be involved in Gumbi’s killing.
