North West premier Bushy Maape is in Thailand receiving further medical treatment.

This was revealed by the province Head of Communications, Brian Setswambung,

“Premier Maape will be out of the country from 21 January until 31 January 2024.

“This follows and advice and referral by his doctor to seek further medical treatment in Thailand,” said Setwambung.

Maape resumed his duties in November last year, after he fell ill following minor orthopaedic surgery in June 2023.

Last week, the premier together with the MEC of Education undertook a visit to Dingake Primary School in Verdwaal near Lichtenburg, to monitor progress registered in the implementation of schools’ breakfast programme.

According to Setswambung, MEC for Cooperative Governance Nono Maloyi, will act as premier during Maape’s absence.

“During his absence, the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Patrick Dumile Nono Maloyi will act as Premier.

“MEC Maloyi has since been sworn in by the Judge President of the North West Division, Ronald Hendricks,” explained Setswambung.

Maloyi is not new to the office, after he previously acted in the office during Maape’s leave of absence last year.

Meanwhile, Setswambung added that a formal notification of Premier Maape’s travel has been sent to both President Cyril Ramaphosa and the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, Susana Dantjie.
