Rand Water Executive killed at a school campaign

In the aftermath of a tragic mass shooting in Gugulethu that left seven people dead, the community is left seeking answers and justice. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they intensify their investigations.

Water utility Rand Water has confirmed that two of its executives has passed away after being shot at the community hall during a back-to-school campaign in Zakariyya Park, south of Johannesburg. 

Another executive and Chief Whip of the City of Joburg Council, Sthembiso Zungu, were rushed to the hospital after being shot at by a suspected hitman. 

According to witnesses, the hitman then fled the scene in a getaway car that was parked outside the had been parked outside the venue.  

“Rand Water sadly confirms a tragic incident that claimed the life of an executive on Monday. As an organisation, we are shocked and devastated by the tragic passing of our treasured colleague, after a tragic incident which occurred at the Rand Water’s Back to School Campaign, which occurred at Zakariyya Park Community Centre. Rand Water’s policy prohibits the organisation from releasing the employee’s name without the family consent,” said the utility spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo.  

Maroo added that the entity is working together with the family of its deceased employee and the police to investigate the matter. 

On Saturday Rand Water posted a media invite on its X account formerly known as Twitter, that its Board Chairperson Ramateu Monyokolo and its Chief Executive Sipho Mosai will be handing over shoes and school uniforms to the value of R470 000 to 1 670 learners from 8 schools of ward 122, City of Joburg.

Meanwhile, the Gauteng Department of Education has condemned the incident and confirmed that no learner and staff members were injured during the incident. 

The department has since dispatched a psychosocial support team to all affected schools to provide necessary trauma counselling.
