Two learners from the RB Dithupe Primary School in Zeerust, North West, are still recovering in hospital after they allegedly consumed suspected contaminated food.
According to authorities, the learners were rushed to a local medical facility last week when they started complaining about stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming popcorn and ice pops they allegedly bought from the vendors operating outside the school premises.
The provincial department of Education has expressed concern about the safety of learners and vowed that it’ll take all the necessary measures to protect them from the risk of food poisoning.
“Upon receiving this information, the school immediately acted by suspending the vendors.
The school does not have a tuckshop in the premises and does not participate in the national school nutrition program National School Nutrition Programme,” said Molokoane.
Meanwhile, the provincial Department of Health confirmed that further laboratory tests have been conducted to determine the cause of the illnesses.
