After a smooth conclusion of the matric final examinations on Thursday, the Department of Education in the North West said it is now ready to commence with the marking of the question papers.

More than 45 000 candidates sat for their final exams in the province.

The Department MEC Viola Motsumi lauded the candidates for their resilience, commitment, and adherence to the examination guidelines throughout what she described as a critical phase.

“The matric class of 2024 has shown incredible discipline and respect for the examination process.

These qualities reflect not only their dedication over the past 13 years but also their readiness to step into the next stage of their lives,” said Motsumi.

Motsumi urged the learners to celebrate the end of the exams responsibly and honour their hard work.

These follows concerns regarding the “pens down” parties held across the country, which often lead leads to the deaths of learners, or in some cases, violence, underage drinking and drugs abuse among others.

The marking will begin on Saturday 30 November at 19 marking centres across the province.

Meanwhile, speaking on You FM Newshour, the department spokesperson Mphata Molokoane confirmed that it’s all systems go for the marking of the papers.

“Nineteen marking venues across the province opened on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.

Markers will arrive on Friday, and they will undergo 15 hours of intensive training starting,” explained Molokoane.

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarhube is expected to release the matric results on 13 January 2025.
